ICYMI: Smith, Brady Demand Answers on Waste and Abuse in American Rescue Plan

 House Budget Committee Republican Leader Jason Smith (R-MO) and House Ways & Means Committee Republican Leader Kevin Brady (R-TX) sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen demanding an accounting of the waste in the $2 trillion American Rescue Plan.

Hundreds of billions in abuse and fraud of taxpayer dollars have occurred while the highest inflation in 40 years is crushing working families.
“Last year, Democrats enacted the largest spending bill in American history – the $2 trillion American Rescue Plan Act (Public Law 117-2 or ARPA). Since its enactment, inflation has persisted at record levels and numerous examples of misuse, waste, fraud, and abuse of funds continue to be uncovered. Although Democrats claimed this law was about defeating COVID-19, less than 9 percent of its total funding was allocated for public health to actually combat the virus, while $500 billion was allocated for state and local government bailouts…This waste of American taxpayer dollars undoubtedly demonstrates a failure of government and a failure of leadership. Smith and Brady warned Secretary Yellen against destroying key documents related to the misuse of taxpayer funds, including documents and information about stimulus checks that were sent to prisoners, foreign citizens, illegal immigrants, and the dead, and any documents related to the Biden Administration’s attempt to recoup taxpayer money.
